DVD Packaging

Horror Films of All Time in Pictures. Source: http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/gallery/2010/oct/22/horror-gallery

This was particularly useful for building up my information for the 60 seconds as I wanted to use iconic images of horror films to coincide with the audio of various people screaming. I have screen shot some of the ones I recognise and have been mentioned within my research several times so will probably be used.

Google photography award poster

Continuing on from my previous comments about white type on a photograph, I saw this poster advertising the google photography award and thought how well the type worked. This is something that I did trial in my initial trials for this project but didn't think it was appropriate due to the limitations of the images I was using. It will, however, inspire me to notice smaller things like this and also to start to take more photographs myself.

In relation to our current brief it has made me aware of positioning of type and also to try different coloured type. At this stage, however, it has made me begin to consider the application of type on an image.

Possible quotes for the idents

"I am the devil and I am here to do the devil's work" - Devils Reject

"I'm close my eyes, I'm scared to open them" - Blair Witch Project (Heather's monologue)

"What an excellent day for an exorcism" - The Exorcist

"We're gonna need a bigger boat" - Jaws

"Redrum redrum redum" - The Shining

"I ate his liver..." - Silence of the Lambs

"Here's Johnny" - The Shining

"I want to play a game?" - Saw

Type and it's relationship with images and audio.

I wanted to put this video up because of the white typography over the moving image at the beginning, it's a very small detail but something that I think works really well. I am really interested in typography over photography or filming as I think it's so satisfying when done well. Something that is used quite a lot. Mixing both actual images and type is something I really think works well. A different genre and subject but the typography used in it does not completely detract from the image but instead enhances it. Sometimes it irritates me that the horizon is not perfectly horizontal. Tarantino's use of type within his opening sequence is something that is interesting because of the combination of type and strong audio, I wouldn't have considered it naturally but it works so well, for an opening scene it sets such a tone and pace to the film. It inspires me to start looking at strong lyrical music for my idents to make a statement, similarly to Sorrentino's work.

WARNING UNKNOWN FILM 1/0 ERROR

Well this saved my life....

Film 4 audio for ident logo

This was a great resource for subtle audio for the film4 ident, showing a variety that are useful to strengthen the logo, as on it's own it seems quite empty and with some audio it makes such a difference as shown on my practice.

Fright Fest

I thought this advert for frightfest was great, it had an eery side but with the dramatic voice over it created a humorous tone as well. Despite spending so long on considering what it was that scared people, including myself, this triggered to me that this could also be lifted by an underlying comedic value.

Change in idea for ident audio.

IL DIVO SORRENTINO

After seeing this and noticing the same with Tarrentino films, I realised that the effect from using type without audio then using a strong audio track over the top it could create a much more exciting and engaging effect
This was an obvious (slightly cliched idea) Also used by:

After research into Film4 and realising that there was already a fright night....actually called FrightFest, I went to look at the film4 website for this to see the colours and tone used. Just as an interesting reference point.

Audio: Top Ten Horror Films

I have started to consider the sort of audio I will use within my title sequence, in my design context blog I have started looking at this here.

I have noticed from my research (although ongoing) that the important thing with the audio is to use something particularly plain and to decide on it early on in the design process as the timing and tone of the  overall piece need to be cohesive and if a random piece of audio is used without consideration then it might not work with the visual aspects.

I thought that this is a good option due to the lack of lyrics and the fact that this would allow the viewer to read through the text as it has no lyrics so they could concentrate on the words. It's builds up suspense well and reminds me of a heart beating fast. Particularly 30-90 seconds. The pace of the audio would also allow a type effect on the writing. Like a government report being written out.

Although during a crit it was commented that the audio I had been looking at was all existing horror movie soundtrack music, although this was put as a strength I felt that it didn't show much imagination or consideration of other music. So I thought that maybe a piece of classical music that with the right imagery could have an eery effect.

I started to think about this and decided to get someone else opinion, I asked people about their favourite pieces of classical music with a potential to be unsettling and built on with the right imagery and tone of language.

Channel 4 Typefaces and Idents

Looking at the end of each adverts on the channel 4 clips, the use of the 4 is particularly strong and has been used and adapted by channel 4. I have chosen not to put the entire clips up as I was only concentrating on the composition and movement in the last few seconds. I think this is as far as the channels limitations for the sting will extend to, the rest of the advert is down to me and the tone of voice I want to create with both audio and visuals.

Despite a clear image of my program going to channel 4, I am going to look at a broader range because this will allow me to look at the entire adverts to see if there is a big difference in the tenor in each piece  due to the channel it's on.

This example of a bbc2 ident for the series 'Heroes', an example of how a minimal amount of both type and image can create a simple ident that communicates effectively with the audience. I think what is important in this ident is to concentrate on a strong piece of advertising that shouts out to your intended audience and makes the connection. During a crit it was discussed that it was important to get to the heart of why things scare us, and that it was key to make the viewer get this feeling or a small part of it. I mentioned in earlier posts that a 'Top Ten' countdown was not something I would like to watch, and from talking to others it it seems to be something that is overdone, so therefore I am going to concentrate on making something I and my peers would be interested in. I will incorporate the top ten films I have chosen but this won't be my title or main aim as I think it would be too weak and predictable.

Channel 4's adverts for Big Brother are something very effective and striking, with the use of an interesting logo they have taken it in all sort of directions. Obviously with academic references to Orwell's 1984, it is a program that through the choice of name could widen it's audience.

By using something like this, a well known symbol the program can reach more than it's intended audiences.
